Part of a new series of webcasts on Commercial Biomass Boiler Technology by Froling Energy happening in October and November
“The Role of Forest Biomass in Addressing Climate Change” kicks off the series on October 22 at 3 pm. The speaker will be Dr. Robert Malmsheimer, professor of Forest Policy and Law at SUNY Syracuse, who has done a great deal of research on the topic.
Some say that we need to leave our forests undisturbed because they do such a great job of pulling carbon dioxide from the air. However, the speaker’s research shows that when active scientific, sustainable forest management is employed, forests can actually increase their net carbon sequestration. As a result, when sustainably sourced wood chips replace the use of oil or gas, there is a net carbon benefit.
Dr Malmsheimer’s presentation uses findings from the peer-reviewed literature to highlight how forest biomass-based energy can provide real and permanent climate change benefits. Attendees will understand why the IPCC has stated, “In the long term, a sustainable forest management strategy aimed at maintaining or increasing forest carbon stocks, while producing an annual sustained yield of timber, fiber, or energy from the forest, will generate the largest sustained mitigation benefit.”
This program is part of a series of webinars on commercial biomass boiler technology put on Froling Energy who invites engineers, architects, sustainability executives and facilities managers to attend. Dr. Robert Malmsheimer is a Professor of Forest Policy and Law at the SUNY ESF, where his research focuses on forest carbon accounting and public policy. He chaired two Society of American Forester’s Task Forces that evaluated how forests and their products can best address climate change, and co-authored an analysis and summary of 135 peer reviewed science articles on forests and bioenergy. He also co-authored the the “Forests” chapter of the 3rd U.S. National Climate Assessment.
Dr. Malmsheimer has provided more than 100 science-based policy briefing to national and international policymakers, including providing congressional testimony and giving two presentations at the United Kingdom’s House of Commons. He is the recipient of the Sir William Schlich Memorial Award — the pre-eminent award in US forest policy — and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
