EMBARGOED INFO
Awards preceding the Governor’s Remarks:
The Renewable Energy Champion award recognizes an individual typically in the renewable industry who represents, and tirelessly ‘champions’, the benefits of developing, creating, informing, and striving to improve our state with the deployment of renewable energy generation.
Tom Gray was champion ahead of his time. The Vermonter started what is now the American Wind Energy Association, famously keeping it afloat in its early days using his own credit cards. Under Tom’s direction, AWEA has helped support the efforts of communities, entrepreneurs, and states to realize clean, renewable, and low-cost effort. After serving as AWEA’s executive director for many years, Tom moved back to Vermont.
Linda Gray will accept the award on his behalf. A celebration of Tom’s life will take place later this month at Georgia Community Wind.
This year, the Renewable Energy Innovation Award, which recognizes a project, company, organization, or individual contributing innovative, influential, and transformative efforts for implementing renewable energy and climate action in Vermont, goes to the Way To Go Challenge. Way To Go! Is focused on getting K–12 schools on board to battle carbon pollution head-on.
