- A massive expansion of Nectar Farms in the Australian state of Victoria will be powered by wind energy with battery storage. The $430 million (A$565 million) project will use the latest hydroponic glasshouse and plant technology. - The latest issue of the Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly shows that renewable energy surpassed nuclear energy in March and April, with renewables at 21.60% versus 20.34% for nuclear in March, and 22.98% versus 19.19% in April. While renewable energy is growing rapidly, nuclear power declines. [Renewable Energy Magazine]
- A report by the DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory concluded that widespread use of building controls across the country could cut energy consumption by an average of 29%, or the equivalent electricity used by 12 to 15 million Americans. The laboratory investigated 34 different types of energy efficiency measures. [CleanTechnica]
- Last week, a Chinese province conducted a test to show it was possible for the entire region to run solely on green energy. For seven continuous days, over 5 million citizens living in the province survived on without use of any fossil fuels, on 100% renewable energy, according to the State-run Xinhua News Agency. - The US Conference of Mayors officially endorsed local-level progress toward 100% renewable energy sources. Leaders from more than 250 cities approved a resolution supporting a transition to wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal power by 2035. The resolution specifically excluded coal plants, nuclear power, and dams. [CityLab]
