A new study from research scientists at Stanford University has linked a 4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded in East Texas in 2012 to the now common oil industry practice of hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) and the accompanying wastewater injection wells. Oil producers in the Opec group of countries will make another attempt this week to reverse a slump in crude prices that is causing problems for the poorer Opec members, according to Algeria’s energy minister. He said there would be an informal gathering of Opec members on the sidelines of an energy conference in Algiers. [BBC]
