The expansion of solar, like most any other emerging tech, will be a series of carrots and sticks. Entrenched special interests predictably jump to extremes with worst case claims of economic impact.
But if we take a cursory look at history with efforts like the Clean Water Act or the removal of lead from gasoline, we find the fear mongering doesn’t match the reality once the dust settles.
Are these aggressive near term and long term goals within reach? Too soon to tell.
The stakes are enormous: policymakers everywhere will be watching to see if California can pull this off. Getting a 40 percent cut will require more than bucking up wind and solar and putting more electric cars on the road. California is about to find out what a truly radical climate policy looks like
